Hospital Visitor Guidelines


Riley Children's Health at IU Health North will allow up to six designated visitors. Only two visitors may visit at any one time. Visitors must be 18 years or older. Some units may have additional visitor guidelines in place.

Please review the additional information below or speak with a member of your/your child’s care team to help answer any questions.

  • Pediatric inpatients may have two parents/guardians and up to four designated visitors.
  • Maternity patients may have up to six designated visitors.
  • Only two visitors in the room at any one time
  • Only two parents/guardians can stay overnight.
  • Visitors under the age of 18 may be permitted by each unit based on considerations for end of life
  • Designated visitors may not be changed throughout the patient's stay, however those designated visitors can switch out as frequently as they wish outside the unit.
  • Masks are not required but will still be available to those that choose to wear them.
  • Please practice respiratory etiquette and visit at another time if you are feeling ill.

Care for Expectant Mothers and Newborns

At Riley Children's at IU Health North, expectant mothers and newborns with urgent medical needs can access highly skilled care. Riley maternal-fetal medicine specialists provide outpatient care and imaging for high-risk mothers and consult on inpatient cases. Riley neonatologists care for newborns in a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at IU Health North Hospital.

Pediatric Emergency Care

Pediatric Emergency Care

Riley Children's offers pediatric emergency care for children in the IU Health North Hospital Emergency Department. Our doctors provide treatment for infants and children up to 18 years old, and our team of professionals is prepared for any health-related emergency. Our dedicated pediatric space includes eight pediatric patient rooms, a child-friendly environment, and more.

Riley emergency medicine doctors, nurses, Child Life specialists and respiratory therapists staff the IU Health North Hospital Emergency Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The following information will help you prepare for your child's visit. This could be for a visit with one of our specialists, outpatient surgery or an inpatient stay.

Visitor Information

Visitor Hours

Family and friends are an important part of wholeness and health. Our open visitation policy allows visitors 24 hours a day to promote healing and wellness. Children under 14 must be supervised by an adult. Some units also require health screenings for the protection of our patients, and some areas offer limited access to visitors.

Entry doors are locked 9 pm – 6 am. During these hours, visitors can communicate by intercom with a security associate to gain entrance.

Know Before You Go

Q: If I am sick, may I still visit a patient at Riley Children's at IU Health North?

A: You should not visit a patient if you are sick, especially if you have a sore throat, cold or fever.

Q: Is smoking allowed at Riley Children's at IU Health North?

A: Riley Children's is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the grounds.

Q: What is the alcohol and drug policy?

A: Alcohol and drugs are not permitted in our facilities.

Q: What is the firearm policy at Riley Children's at IU Health North?

A: Other than IU Health security officers and on-duty law enforcement officers, no one may carry or have in their possession a weapon or firearm at our any of our grounds or facilities. Law enforcement officers should check with IU Health security if they plan to carry a weapon while on our premises.

Parking

Patients may enter at either of the main entrances at IU Health North Hospital entrances—Entrance C (south) and Entrance B (north)—or as directed by information provided by your doctor. Both first-floor entrances lead directly into the atrium and offer covered drop-off.

Parking is free, with surface parking lots conveniently located near each entrance to help patients and visitors get to their destinations quickly. Inside the hospital, our Welcome Center team is available to answer questions.

Lodging

There are several hotels in the area. Some offer discounts for family and guests of hospital patients. Please contact the Welcome Desk at 317.688.2042 for more information.

Ancillary Services

Pharmacy

The IU Health Retail Pharmacy provides prescription medications to patients after they are discharged from the hospital.

Monday – Friday, 7 am – 6 pm

Saturday, 8 am – 2 pm

Radiology

Radiology is located on the first floor near the patient registration desk. EKGs generally do not require an appointment and are available walk-in from 8 am - 2:30 pm. X-rays are also available walk-in from 7 am - 7 pm

Labs

Laboratory testing and pathology services help physicians complete your child’s diagnosis and treatment as quickly as possible.

Hours:

Monday – Friday, 7 am – 5:30 pm

Saturday (appointment only), 7 am – 1 pm

Dining

We offer a variety of healthy onsite dining options for patients, families and guests. If you prefer to dine offsite, visit the Welcome Center for a full list of excellent dining options near the hospital.

Atrio

Our restaurant is located in the atrium on the first floor of the hospital and features daily specials and includes a variety of made-to-order meals.

Weekends, 6:30 am – 3:30 pm

Atrio Bistro

The Atrio Bistro is located on the 1st floor across from the gift shop within the IU Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center. Menu items include coffee, hot food items, salads, sandwiches, smoothies and more.

Self-checkout is available after 2 pm.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 2 pm

Coffee Bar

A coffee bar on the first floor of the atrium offers light food, coffee and tea.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 7 am – 4 pm

Room Service

Our onsite restaurant, Atrio, provides room service Monday through Sunday, 6 am - 9:30 pm. Family members and other guests may also order meals from Atrio at an additional charge. To place your order, call Atrio at 317.688.2263. An operator will confirm any diet restrictions. Allow an hour for your order to arrive after calling room service.

Wheelchairs

Upon your arrival, you can request a wheelchair from any of our associates or visit the Welcome Center.

Internet Service

Complimentary Wi-Fi access is available for you, your family and guests 24/7 throughout the hospital. Online access is also available on computers located in most patient rooms. Please note that IU Health cannot provide technical help for your device or connecting to the network.

ATM

An ATM is located on the first floor at the north end of the atrium.

Mail Service

Outgoing Mail

A mailbox is located on the first floor in the atrium next to the Welcome Desk.

Incoming Mail

Patients may receive mail while staying at IU Health North Hospital. Anyone sending mail to a patient should address the envelope as follows:

If mail arrives after you leave the hospital, we will forward it to your home address.

Deliveries

Flowers and gifts may be delivered to the Welcome Desk at Riley Children's at IU Health North. Hospital volunteers deliver these items to patient rooms.

Hours for Accepting Deliveries

  • Monday – Friday, 5:30 am – 9 pm
  • Weekends, 8 am – 6:30 pm

Items Not Allowed

For the safety of our patients and staff, latex balloons are not allowed in the hospital, though Mylar balloons are permitted. In addition, poinsettias are not permitted at IU Health North Hospital.

Deliveries for Non-Disclosure Patients

For a variety of reasons, some patients choose to keep their stay in the hospital private. If you have asked us to not tell anyone that you are here by registering as a “non-disclosure” or “no information” patient, our team cannot say that you are a patient at the hospital or accept any deliveries.

Riley Cheer Guild Gift Shop

The Riley Cheer Guild Gift Shop offers unique gifts for all ages, including jewelry, home décor and clothes, as well as a selection of flowers, balloons, cards, snacks and drinks.

Proceeds from the Riley Cheer Guild Gift Shop benefit philanthropy at IU Health North Hospital.
