The Sarcoma and Solid Tumor Program at Riley Children’s treats children and young adults with a variety of solid tumors, including neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, Wilms' tumors, and other cancers.
Our doctors apply a collaborative approach to treating solid tumors that includes surgery, interventional radiology, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
The Riley Sarcoma and Solid Tumor Program combines the expertise of specialists in related disciplines through an intensely collaborative treatment approach.
Children and young adults treated by our program receive care from experts in specific tumor types. These experts work with you and your family to develop a treatment plan unique to each child.
Our team includes physicians, specialists, nurse practitioners and nurses specializing in pediatric solid tumors, behavioral health, nutrition, surgery and social work. Our physician specialists include:
- Expert pediatric oncologists experienced in the most recent treatments available
- Highly-skilled pediatric surgeons with experience in removing all types of pediatric cancers
Radiation oncologists with access to cutting-edge technology, such as linear accelerators and 3-D conformal radiotherapy, deliver higher doses of radiation directly to a tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
Treatment for sarcoma and other solid tumors depends on the stage and location of cancer. Your child’s doctors will develop a treatment plan using the most up-to-date therapies. Possible treatments may include:
- Oncologic Surgery: This treatment option removes cancer but can sometimes cause the removal of healthy tissue or lymph nodes to save a limb from potential amputation.
- Chemotherapy: A powerful drug that destroys cancer cells but can come with its own set of side effects that are both short and long term
- Radiation Therapy: Uses high energy, penetrating waves or particles. This treatment option destroys cancer cells or prevents the tumor from growing.
