The Sarcoma and Solid Tumor Program at Riley Children’s treats children and young adults with a variety of solid tumors, including neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, Wilms' tumors, and other cancers.

Our doctors apply a collaborative approach to treating solid tumors that includes surgery, interventional radiology, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

The Riley Sarcoma and Solid Tumor Program combines the expertise of specialists in related disciplines through an intensely collaborative treatment approach.

Children and young adults treated by our program receive care from experts in specific tumor types. These experts work with you and your family to develop a treatment plan unique to each child.

Our team includes physicians, specialists, nurse practitioners and nurses specializing in pediatric solid tumors, behavioral health, nutrition, surgery and social work. Our physician specialists include:

  • Expert pediatric oncologists experienced in the most recent treatments available
  • Highly-skilled pediatric surgeons with experience in removing all types of pediatric cancers

Radiation oncologists with access to cutting-edge technology, such as linear accelerators and 3-D conformal radiotherapy, deliver higher doses of radiation directly to a tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

Treatment for sarcoma and other solid tumors depends on the stage and location of cancer. Your child’s doctors will develop a treatment plan using the most up-to-date therapies. Possible treatments may include:

  • Oncologic Surgery: This treatment option removes cancer but can sometimes cause the removal of healthy tissue or lymph nodes to save a limb from potential amputation.
  • Chemotherapy: A powerful drug that destroys cancer cells but can come with its own set of side effects that are both short and long term
  • Radiation Therapy: Uses high energy, penetrating waves or particles. This treatment option destroys cancer cells or prevents the tumor from growing.

Research

Riley Children's Center for Cancer & Blood Diseases is affiliated with the IU Health Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center for clinical care.

Riley Children’s is a Children’s Oncology Group Phase I Consortium member. Patients can access the latest clinical trials and leading-edge medications, all while under the care of highly skilled physicians and staff.

  • We offer cutting-edge clinical trials, giving qualified patients access to innovative investigational therapies.
  • We work closely with our precision genomics program to better understand the nature of the tumors we treat and to help reveal new treatment options that may be effective when other treatment options no longer work.
  • We provide the only multidisciplinary center in Indiana offering genetic sequencing at the time of cancer diagnosis, enabling physicians to identify molecular drivers of tumors and enroll patients immediately into a molecular-guided treatment program, leading to better outcomes.
