The Sickle Cell Program at Riley Children’s Health provides comprehensive, lifelong sickle cell care so patients can live healthy and active lives.

Riley Children’s Health is home to an all-inclusive treatment program for sickle cell disease. With a strong focus on leading-edge research, Riley Children’s offers access to the latest therapies, exclusive clinical trials and patient- and family-centered care.

Why Choose Riley Children's

Why Choose Riley Children's

Our program provides comprehensive sickle cell care to patients with sickle cell disease as early as possible and effectively manages their condition to adulthood. The team works with children with sickle cell disease to help them live healthy and active lives while helping families deal with challenges when their child has sickle cell disease.

Since sickle cell is a chronic disease that lasts a lifetime, our experts also specialize in transitioning pediatric patients to adult care. Children with sickle cell can still live healthy and active lives.

Our unique program offerings include:

  • Indiana’s only stem cell transplant center for non-malignant transplants.
  • The team includes Riley pediatric specialists in
    • Pulmonology
    • Neurology
    • Nephrology

This collaboration with multiple doctors and healthcare providers allows us to coordinate care for medical complications that coincide with sickle cell disease. Social workers, educational liaisons, psychologists, and other professionals with expertise in sickle cell contribute to complete patient care.

  • Lifespan Sickle Cell Disease Center of Excellence, a partnership between Riley and Indiana University Health, provides lifelong sickle cell care, reducing disruptions and barriers to care in high-risk periods.
  • With a designated nurse coordinator, our state-funded Transition Program supports adolescent patients to prepare for a smooth adult-care transition.
  • Sickle Cell Story Club is offered to provide developmentally appropriate books with positive messages and diverse characters to our patients at every clinic visit.

Research

Our hematologists actively participate in groundbreaking clinical trials, and we are currently offering more clinical trials for sickle cell disease than ever before. Some are exclusive to Riley, the Midwest or not widely available, including an NIH-funded acupuncture study specific to sickle cell disease and therapeutic trials for Oxbrita and Gleevec.

Education
