What Our Program Offers
The Comprehensive Hematology Program at Riley Children’s offers expert clinical care with unique programs and leading-edge clinical research. With experts in the field and a robust focus on clinical research, Riley Children’s offers access to the latest therapies, exclusive clinical trials, and patient- and family-centered care.
Additionally, our program offers access to Indiana’s only stem cell transplant center for non-malignant transplants.
Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center of Excellence
The largest pediatric sickle cell program in the state by specialists and patient volume, Riley uses a novel co-located multi-team approach to providing patients with sickle cell disease coordinated care, along with access to clinical research studies and the state’s only stem cell transplant center for hemoglobinopathies (disorders with abnormal production of hemoglobin).
Immunohematology Program
Comprehensive care for children and adolescents with immune deficiencies, lymphoproliferative diseases, neutrophil disorders and other conditions that impact the body’s ability to fight off infections.
Bone Marrow Failure Program
Our program includes an internationally known research laboratory studying gene functions and interactions to understand better and cure Fanconi anemia and other bone marrow failure syndromes.
Hemostasis and Thrombosis Program
We provide multidisciplinary care to pediatric patients with bleeding and clotting disorders, including heavy menstrual bleeding and vascular anomalies.
Our team also partners with the Herzog Laboratory at IU School of Medicine. This lab is a leader in researching alternative treatments for children with hemophilia.

Riley Children's Center for Cancer & Blood Diseases is affiliated with the IU Health Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center for clinical care.
Our hematologists actively participate in groundbreaking clinical trials, and we are currently offering more clinical trials for sickle cell disease than ever before. Some are exclusive to Riley in the Midwest or not widely available, including an NIH-funded acupuncture study specific to sickle cell disease and therapeutic trials for voxelotor and imatinib.
Education
The Comprehensive Hematology Program helps train the next generation of pediatric hematologists and oncologists. Pediatric oncology/hematology fellows at the Indiana University School of Medicine learn about the latest advancements in personalized cancer treatment by spending part of their training with our team.
