The Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) Program at Riley Children’s Health helps babies and young children (up to age 5) with preterm lung disease. We bring together a team of experts who work together to care for your child. We are the only outpatient program like it in Indiana that offers complete care in one place for your child.
What to Expect with the BPD Program
We use a team approach treat and manage preterm lung disease and related conditions. We bring together specialists from many areas to work side by side in caring for your child. During each visit, your child may see several experts in one location. This makes care more convenient and less stressful for your family.
Our team includes professionals who specialize in caring for babies born prematurely. This includes:
- Pulmonary specialist (lung doctor)
- Early Years provider
- Registered dietitian
- Speech therapist
- Physical therapist
- Respiratory therapist
- Social worker
- Registered nurse
Each visit is designed with your child’s needs in mind. You may not see every specialist every time. We’ll start with more frequent visits. Gradually, we space the visits out as your child grows and progresses.
Treatments
Treatments
Children are seen regularly so our team can closely monitor progress and adjust care as needed. We provide a range of tests and screenings to help us better understand how your child is developing, including:
- Sleep studies
- Echocardiograms
- Chest imaging (X-rays and CT)
- Pulmonary function testing
- Video feeding studies
- Hearing screens
Developmental Surveillance
Babies born early are at a higher risk for developmental delays. Our Early Years Program includes special screenings that go beyond what’s offered in a general pediatric office. These tools help us catch concerns early. They include:
- ASQ (Ages & Stages Questionnaires): Screens for early developmental delays, so we can refer for support if needed
- M-CHAT (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers): A screening to assess the risk of autism spectrum disorder
- GMA (General Movement Assessment): A video-based tool that looks for risk and early signs of cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders in infants up to 4 months old.
- HINE (Hammersmith Infant Neurological Exam): Helps detect risk and signs of cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders for infants 3 to 12 months old.
- Bayley Scale: A detailed assessment of how toddlers (ages 2 to 3) are growing in areas like thinking, talking, moving, social skills and daily routines.
Communication
Clear communication is key to giving your child the best care. At Riley Children’s, our team of doctors, nurses, therapists and other specialists work closely together in one location. This team-based approach means everyone is on the same page, and your child receives care that’s centered around their unique needs.
