"Traumatizing" and "terrifying" is how Taylor Farmer describes delivering her babies at 24 weeks and three days. On May 27, her babies, Leelan and Lynleigh, were born at Riley Hospital for Children.
After seven years of hoping for positive pregnancy tests, the couple found out they would be parents to twins. The babies both spent months in Riley's NICUs. Leelan was discharged on December 10, but Lynleigh remains inpatient in the PICU.
"To have one so great and then have one so sick is very hard," Farmer said. "To accept it is even harder."
Farmer, Leelan, and Dad Brandon Van Horn, stay in the Ronald McDonald House which allows Farmer to see both babies every day. Van Horn drives hundreds of miles round trip each week to continue working.
"This is all we've ever prayed for," Farmer said. "We have it. So for our children, we're willing to do whatever be here every step of the way. I don't ever want them to feel like they were alone or anything."
Lynleigh will likely remain inpatient for several more months as she grows and as her parents learn to manage her care while she is on a trach. Farmer said caring for Leelan while also tending to Lynleigh gives her immense hope for her daughter's future.
"I know one day she's not going to have this, we're going to hear her, and she's going to be great," Farmer said.
