Services Offered
The Charis Center for Eating Disorders has supported people with eating disorders since 2003. Conditions we treat include:
- Anorexia nervosa
- Bulimia nervosa
- Binge eating disorder
- Other specified eating disorders
- Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder
The Charis Center, part of the IU Health system, is the largest and most comprehensive facility for patients with eating disorders in Indiana.
Our team includes physicians, therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals who work closely together. Many team members have cared for patients at Charis for 15 to 20 years or more. Several providers are also on faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Our goal is to provide evidence-based care in a supportive, respectful environment. We focus on treating the eating disorder while also addressing other mental or physical health concerns that may affect recovery.
Levels of Care
We offer three levels of care, based on individual needs:
- Outpatient care: Available for children, adolescents, young adults and adults
- Intensive Outpatient Program: The Intensive Outpatient Program is for adults who need more support than outpatient care or who are transitioning from a higher level of care.
- Partial Hospitalization Program: This program is for adolescents ages 12-18 who need a higher level of care or are stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment.
Your care team will help recommend the level of care that best supports you and your needs.
Group Therapy Options
Group therapy may be recommended as part of care. Options may include:
- Process groups for adolescents, including art-based activities
- Skills groups that teach:
- Dialectical behavioral therapy

What to Expect
Once a referral is received:
- Insurance coverage is reviewed
- Our team contacts the patient and/or family to arrange initial visits
- Initial visits are in person with all disciplines. Visits may be scheduled on different days.
Insurance coverage for mental health care can be complex. If you have questions or special circumstances, our front office team can work with IU Health cost estimator services to help guide you.
Every Charis patient must have a primary care provider.
It is not required to have a referral for treatment at the Charis Center except for patients with Medicaid. Medicaid requires a referral.
The Charis Center requires the following medical records to be sent before receiving treatment services: growth charts, labs and vitals data, and medical office notes.
Initial Visits and Ongoing Care
Initial visits include:
- Medical evaluation (up to age 25 years). Medical care for patients over age 25 years is typically managed by the patient’s primary care provider, who may coordinate with Charis medical providers as needed.
- Nutritional assessment
- Family therapy (up to age 18)
- Individual therapy (ages 18 and older)
After initial visits:
- Medical visits remain in person. For patients who live farther away, medical care may be coordinated with a local primary care provider.
- Therapy and dietitian follow-ups may be virtual or in person.
- Frequency of follow up visits is individualized for each patient’s needs.
