Speech and hearing are linked to many vital life skills, such as learning, socializing, communicating and eating. Audiology & Speech Pathology at Riley at IU Health is a comprehensive program dedicated to helping children achieve better quality of life by identifying, assessing and managing their speech, hearing and related problems.

We carefully coordinate your child’s care through a vast set of resources unique to Riley Children's Health. Our speech pathologists and/or audiologists serve children in many ways, including:

  • Hearing evaluations
  • Hearing aid dispensing
  • Screening newborns when a hearing problem is detected at birth
  • Evaluating and treating speech and voice disorders
  • Evaluating and treating with augmentative/alternative communication options
  • Making referrals to appropriate specialists within our Cochlear Implant Program, Ear, Nose & Throat Department or other members of our multidisciplinary team
  • Resolving certain eating disorders or feeding problems
  • Identifying resources and education to help parents, caregivers and family members offer better support to each child

At Riley Children's, your child gets the right kind of care at the right time in his/her development, from birth through adulthood. Our experienced team of audiologists, speech pathologists and hearing specialists are trained to observe your child’s needs in the broader context of overall health, supported by experts in virtually every subspecialty known to pediatric care.

Why Riley Children's Health?

A child with a hearing impairment may need a lifelong commitment from siblings, parents, caregivers, extended family and others. Our multidisciplinary team begins working with hearing-impaired children at birth, and we often maintain a strong connection with their families throughout childhood to support each child’s development. Your child will always be treated as a dynamic person—not just a patient with an isolated health issue.

Specialists at Riley Children's can diagnose and treat a broad range of hearing and speech-related problems caused by accidents, health conditions and congenital or acquired disorders. We are Indiana’s leading resource for children with severe, rare or complex hearing conditions, referred by their physicians for any number of reasons, including:

  • A previous newborn screening that suggests a hearing or sensory problem
  • Speech and language that is not progressing normally
  • Monitoring children who get chemotherapy or other medications that could affect hearing
  • Tinnitus
  • A sudden onset of hearing loss after an accident or a series of ear infections
  • A known sensorineural, conductive or unilateral hearing loss
  • Hearing loss in certain pitches such as high or low frequency

Whether we meet your child at birth or later in childhood through a physician referral, we offer the care he/she needs to thrive.
