About Me
Dr. Laurie L. Ackerman, MD is an experienced pediatric neurosurgeon with expertise in caring for patients with neurosurgical conditions. She specializes in:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Concussions
- Hydrocephalus
- Congenital brain and spine anomalies such as spina bifida
She also does craniofacial surgery in partnership with plastic surgery to treat infants with craniosynostosis.
Ackerman began her career as a registered nurse specializing in neuroscience and emergency medicine. After completing her master’s degree in nursing, her interest in neurosurgery motivated her to expand her pattern of practice with a medical degree from University of Iowa College of Medicine. She then completed residency at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and obtained a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Indiana University School of Medicine / Riley Hospital for Children.
She is passionate about patient and family teaching. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, traveling, playing piano and working in her yard.
