The Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program at Riley Children’s Health at IU Health North offers a multidisciplinary approach to helping adolescents with severe obesity through pediatric weight loss surgery.

As Indiana’s only dedicated adolescent bariatric surgery program, our team includes specialized pediatric and adult bariatric surgeons, dietitians, social workers, psychologists, and other specialists. Together, we aim to improve long-term health outcomes and enhance the quality of life for your child struggling with obesity.

What to Expect

What to Expect

Starting with a physical assessment, our program offers continuous support for your child throughout every stage of their journey—from surgery to follow-up care. This process, from the first visit to surgery, typically spans six to twelve months, allowing our team time to assess, evaluate, and prepare your child for their procedure. This approach ensures that your child receives personalized treatment tailored to their condition and he or she is fully prepared for surgery.

Common reasons for pediatric weight loss surgery

Adolescent bariatric surgery may be considered for your child if they are between the ages of 13 and 18, and are severely obese, severely obese with other comorbidities, or unable to lose weight through lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, or physical activity.

All surgeries are performed at IU Health North Hospital which is also home to our Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program for adults. This program has been named a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program Comprehensive Accreditation. This accreditation program requires a commitment to resource allocation, patient safety, and quality improvement.
