The Riley dialysis unit team is taking action to fight food insecurity among patients.

Surveys during the early pandemic months revealed a staggering number of patient families were facing food insecurity. Today, as many as half of the families are facing barriers to food access. The pediatric dialysis patients have specific dietary needs, like avoiding foods with high sodium. Less processed foods with lower sodium levels tend to be more expensive.

So, the team decided to do what they could to help patients. In 2021, they opened the dialysis unit food pantry. Since then, they’ve been providing foods to families weekly.

Now, they’re holding a food drive to help stock the shelves in the pantry and be able to provide fresh, healthy foods to patients.
