Amanda Coffey recently started a new role as the clinical operations co-manager of the Riley cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU). Turns out, she shares a special connection to the patients on this unit.

When Amanda was 11 years old, she underwent open heart surgery. Doctors discovered she had an atrial septal defect, which is a large hole between the two upper chambers of the atria. Doctors had to perform surgery in order to repair that hole.

Amanda said she was old enough to understand what was happening and to see the impact her doctors and nurses made on her hospital stay.

Now, she’s hoping to bring that same compassion to the families she interacts with in the CVICU.
