Button Battery Blog

With the holidays ahead, it’s important to be mindful of the dangers of button batteries in the toys we buy our children. To keep your family safe, our injury prevention program shares what you need to know about small batteries this holiday season and throughout the entire year.

What is a button battery?

Button batteries are characterized by their small, compact design, typically circular and flat in shape. Their shiny, coin‑like appearance can make them look intriguing, which may contribute to the temptation for children to play with them.

What is the danger?

Like all batteries, button batteries create a charge through a chemical reaction (alkaline). Due to the small nature of these batteries, these can easily be swallowed by children or placed inside the ears or nose. If the battery is able to make contact with saliva, mucus, or moist skin tissue, then a charged chemical reaction begins. The chemical reaction can quickly burn and dissolve/liquify tissue, which can cause serious or life-threatening damage. It only takes one to two hours for a button battery to start to cause chemical burns within a child, and severe damage if not promptly treated.

How do I keep my kids safe?

  • Avoid buying toys that use button batteries whenever possible. If the toy does come with button batteries make sure the battery compartment has a screw to prevent your child from accessing the battery inside.
  • Supervise your child during play and act quickly if you notice signs of choking, trouble breathing, or difficulty swallowing. Any object smaller than the cardboard tube from a toilet paper roll can pose a choking or swallowing hazard.
  • Keep spare batteries out of sight and away from children.

What do I do if my kid ingested a button battery?

If you are concerned that your child has ingested a battery, immediately seek medical attention by taking them to the nearest Emergency department. Riley Children’s Health offers emergency care in Carmel, Fishers, and Indianapolis. Find a nearby location.
