About Me
Dr. Shekhar Kubal’s area of clinical practice is adult and pediatric liver and intestine/multivisceral transplantation. He is the Chief of Liver & Intestine Transplant Section and Associate Chief of Abdominal Transplant Surgery Division. He also serves as the surgical director of the IU Health adult and living donor liver transplant program. Under Dr. Kubal’s leadership, this program has expanded the donor pool through surgical innovation and consistently ranks in the top 10 in the country for liver transplant volume. IU Health ranked No. 3 for liver transplant volume in 2018.
His clinical interests include living donor liver transplantation, and improving access to liver transplantation. His research interests include fatty liver disease, ischemic reperfusion injury in liver transplantation and liver regeneration.
Dr. Kubal is a professor of surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine. He received his MD degree and residency training at Mumbai University in India. He completed a PhD in transplant research at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, after earning membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Kubal began his abdominal transplant surgery fellowship at IU School of Medicine in 2008 and subsequently joined the faculty.
He has served as the Region 10 representative for the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Liver Intestine Transplant Committee. He also is a member of the Indiana Donor Network advisory board.
