Learning that your child may have a neurological condition or injury can feel overwhelming. At Riley Children’s Health, our pediatric neurosurgery team is here to guide your family every step of the way from diagnosis through treatment and recovery. With advanced techniques and a coordinated approach to care, we provide expert treatment for a wide range of brain, spine and nervous system conditions, helping your child move forward with confidence.

Why choose Riley Children’s Health for pediatric neurosurgery?

Why choose Riley Children’s Health for pediatric neurosurgery?

When your family comes to Riley Children’s, you have access to a comprehensive pediatric health system that cares for a population of more than 1 million children a year. Our pediatric neurosurgery program performs approximately 800 major operative procedures each year, caring for some of the most complex pediatric neurological conditions.

Highly skilled neurosurgeons

At Riley Children’s, our pediatric neurosurgeons have advanced subspecialty experience to treat the full spectrum of complex brain, spine and nervous system conditions in children of all ages. This is just one reason why U.S. News & World Report ranks our pediatric neurology and neurosurgery teams among the top pediatric neuroscience specialists in the nation.

Neurosurgery advancements and technology

When your child needs advanced neurosurgical care, Riley Children’s Neurosurgery is here to help. Our team uses leading-edge technology, including:

  • Indiana’s only magnetoencephalography (MEG) facility, which maps brain activity to guide safer, more precise surgery
  • Advanced brain and spine imaging, including MRI, CT, and specialized PET scans—such as Indiana’s only FET PET—to better evaluate complex neurological conditions
  • Intraoperative imaging for real-time, precise surgical planning
  • Minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques to more safely access deep areas within the brain and spine and allow for faster recovery following surgery
  • Robot-assisted technology for precise biopsy of deep or hard-to-reach brain tumors
  • Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) for minimally invasive treatment of seizure-causing areas in the brain as well as certain brain tumors
  • The only fetal therapy center within Indiana providing prenatal/intrauterine repair of spina bifida
  • A nationally-recognized team of pediatric specialists, available 24/7

Extensive research and access to clinical trials

Through research, clinical trials and innovation in our operating rooms and laboratories, our pediatric neurosurgery team brings new treatments and advanced surgical techniques directly to our patients. We focus on developing and offering safer, more effective approaches—including minimally invasive procedures—so your child can benefit from leading-edge care with less disruption and faster recovery whenever possible.

Best Children's Hospitals, Neurology and Neurosurgery 2024-25, US News & World Report

Nationally ranked neurosurgical care

At Riley Children’s Health, your child has access to Indiana’s only nationally-ranked pediatric neurosurgery program by U.S. News & World Report, bringing some of the nation’s best neurological care closer to home.

Trust our team for comprehensive children’s neurosurgical care

Trust our team for comprehensive children’s neurosurgical care

As one of the largest and most comprehensive pediatric neurosurgery programs in the country, we care for patients from across Indiana and beyond. Our pediatric neurosurgeons and advanced practice providers manage the complete spectrum of complex neurologic problems and disorders in children of all ages, from newborns to young adults. Our team routinely treats the most complicated neurological issues, including intractable epilepsy, skull and spine deformities, traumatic brain and spine injuries, vascular malformations of the brain including aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), congenital conditions such as spina bifida and hydrocephalus, and both benign as well as malignant brain and spine tumors.

Cleft and Craniofacial Anomalies Program

From diagnosis before birth through treatment after delivery, Riley Children’s brings together expert neurosurgeons and craniofacial specialists to create a personalized plan and deliver advanced surgical care for children with complex head and facial abnormalities, such as craniosynostosis.

Comprehensive Epilepsy Program

Our epilepsy surgery program at Riley Children’s delivers expert, team-based care for children with seizures. As Indiana’s only Level 4 pediatric epilepsy center—the highest level of care—our comprehensive program offers advanced diagnostic testing and evaluation, including magnetoencephalography (MEG) and robot-assisted stereotactic EEG (sEEG), and access to state-of-the-art neurosurgical therapies, such as laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), responsive neurostimulation (RNS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS), to treat even the most complex cases.

Neuro-Oncology Program

Riley Children’s provides comprehensive, multispecialty care for children with brain and spinal cord tumors. Our experts work together to guide your family through every step, from initial diagnosis to definitive treatment. Our Neuro-oncology team utilizes advanced surgical procedures and minimally invasive techniques to safely biopsy and/or completely remove tumors, even when they are located in the most delicate areas of the nervous system. We use extensive genetic profiling to learn as much as possible about each child’s tumor. This deeper understanding helps our team identify the radiation and chemotherapy treatments most likely to be effective, allowing us to offer personalized and precision tumor therapy. For children with difficult-to-treat or recurring tumors, molecular testing can uncover additional treatment options that may not otherwise be considered. We also offer access to a wide range of national and international clinical trials for brain and spinal tumors, helping families benefit from the latest advances in care closer to home.

Using advanced diagnostic testing and minimally invasive surgical techniques, our experts work together and provide comprehensive, team-based care to give children the best possible outcomes.

As Indiana’s only program of its kind, the Surgical Spasticity Program at Riley Children’s provides comprehensive treatment for children with conditions like cerebral palsy (CP) that affect muscle tone and movement. Education

We play an important role in training future neurosurgeons through our partnership with Indiana University School of Medicine. Medical students, residents and fellows in the IU School of Medicine Department of Neurological Surgery are mentored by our experienced surgeons and experience the full breadth of pediatric neurosurgical cases. The school’s one-year fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery allows fellows to focus on neurovascular, neuro-oncology, spine or epilepsy/functional subspecialties and prepares them for independent practice and an academic career.
