Riley at IU Health ranked in 9 out of 10 pediatric specialties

INDIANAPOLIS - Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health has once again been distinguished as Indiana’s only nationally ranked children’s hospital by U.S.News & World Report, which released its 2019-20 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings today. Riley at IU Health achieved national ranking in nine out of 10 pediatric specialties, with two programs in the nation’s top 10 and eight in the nation’s top 25. Urology ranks third, and cardiology and heart surgery ranks ninth.

This year, 84 U.S. children’s hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one pediatric specialty evaluated by U.S.News. Riley at IU Health is one of only 30 children’s hospitals in the country to rank in nine or more pediatric specialties.

Based on a combination of clinical data and reputation among pediatric specialists around the country, Riley at IU Health ranked in each of the following areas:

“Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health remains Indiana’s pediatric health leader,” said Matthew Cook, president of Riley at IU Health. “Families will not find a more compassionate team of highly-skilled clinicians who provide compassionate care that is focused on each patient and their family.”

U.S.News introduced the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings in 2007 to help families find the best medical care available for their children. The rankings are the most comprehensive source of quality-related information on U.S. pediatric hospitals.

“The Best Children's Hospitals rankings were designed to help provide families seeking the best medical care for their sick child with access to the most comprehensive data available,” said Ben Harder, Managing Editor and Chief of Health Analysis at U.S. News. “The rankings, coupled with guidance from pediatricians, help families make better-informed decisions about where to find high-quality, compassionate care for their children when they need it most.”

To gather clinical data, U.S.News & World Report sent a clinical questionnaire to 191 pediatric hospitals to assess measures including patient safety, infection prevention and adequacy of nurse staffing. Nearly 11,000 pediatric specialists and subspecialists were surveyed and asked to name the hospitals where they would send patients for serious care without considering location or expense.

Further details on the rankings can be viewed online and in the U.S.News “Best Hospitals 2020” guidebook, which will be available in September.
