Why Are Kids Sick So Often?

Like many parents, you may feel like your kids are always sick. One week it is a cold, the next week it is an ear infection, and you always seem to be in the doctor’s office.

In fact, kids are sick more often; it isn’t uncommon for a child to get six to eight upper respiratory infections each year. Children in school or day care may get sick more frequently because of exposure to more children and more germs.

Getting sick is a part of growing up as children develop immunity from common infections. Some studies show that children in day care are sick more often when they are younger, but are sick less often than their peers in elementary school because they have developed more immunity.

Children also get sick because of how they interact with the world. Many children stick their hands or objects into their mouth, exposing them germs. Wash any toys or items that your child frequently puts into their mouths, and keep floors and other surfaces that your child interacts with clean to help prevent illness.

The most important thing you can do is teach your child to wash their hands. Handwashing goes a long way in preventing the spread of diseases. Wash your child’s hands before and after they eat. Also wash your hands after you change their diaper or help them use the restroom.

The good news is that as children age, they get sick less and less. Until that time, be patient and have the tissues and hand sanitizer ready.
