The Health Benefits of Childhood Sports

It should come as no surprise that many parents see the benefits in getting their children involved in a physical activity, especially when one in three children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with childhood obesity.

Weight management is not the only benefit of childhood sports. Experts find that there are several preventative and mental health advantages too.

Flexibility

With naturally flexible bodies, children can move and bend with much more ease than adults. Children stretch their muscles while warming up, playing and cooling down. While stretching is often something they may take for granted, it allows your child to move with greater ease and prevents injuries.

Cardiovascular function

Just like adults, when kids run around their heart rate increases. The heart is a muscle that needs to be regularly exercised to maintain endurance and pulmonary function for other daily activities. As a result, your child will be less fatigued and more alert throughout the day.

Self-image

When kids play sports, they will develop a sense of responsibility for the team’s performance and cooperation with other players. This carries over into other social interactions with classmates and teachers alike. But don’t mistake an inflated ego for high self-esteem. It’s important for kids to have confidence while also treating others with respect and dignity. If you notice your child putting down other kids to build themselves up, say something to them.

Self-expression

Kids are able to do something they love and express themselves in a healthy way when involved in athletics. The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has even found sports can keep them out of situations that would otherwise be dangerous to their health, and that children can learn to maintain positive relationships on and off the field.
