The 2014 Harold M. Trusler Lectureship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery

Doctor Harold M Trusler was the first intern at Riley at IU Health when it opened in 1924. Doctor Trusler’s desire to help children affected by birth defects and trauma led to his interest in reconstructive Surgery. He went on to become internationally known for his work with Riley’s Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic and was appointed the first Director of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the IU School of Medicine in 1934.

In honor of Doctor Trusler’s contributions to Riley at IU Health and the IU School of Medicine, the Harold M. Trusler Lectureship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery was established to contribute to the continuing medical education of our physicians, staff, residents, and medical students. On April 16, 2014, we were pleased to welcome Doctor Richard A. Hopper as this year’s visiting lecturer.

Doctor Hopper is the Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery and Surgical Director of The Craniofacial Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Doctor Hopper presented the grand rounds lecture, “Evolving Treatment Algorithms for Complex Craniosynostosis” to Riley at IU Health physicians and staff in the hospital’s Ruth Lilly Auditorium. The rest of the day was spent with the Plastic Surgery Division and members of the Cleft and Craniofacial Team, and included additional lectures and case discussion.

The Cleft and Craniofacial Team provides learning opportunities such as the Trusler Lectureship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery as part of our continuing commitment to patient care and research, as well to fulfill our mission of promoting craniofacial awareness and education to medical students and residents-in-training at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

This dedication to continuing medical education of our physicians and staff contributes to the skill and compassionate care provided to the patients visiting the Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic at Riley at IU Health.
