Riley’s Library: More Than Books
My name is Dena Vincent—and for the last 14 years, I have worked as the librarian of Riley’s Edward A. Block Family Library. In addition to being a librarian, I have been specifically trained to help patients and their families better understand health information.
Every day, patients come to Riley Hospital for Children to receive amazing care. For some, the experience can be overwhelming, especially when striving to fully understand all of the nuances that can come with a visit—diseases, drugs, tests and procedures.
That’s where I can help. My name is Dena Vincent—and for the last 14 years, I have worked as the librarian of Riley’s Edward A. Block Family Library. In addition to being a librarian, I have been specifically trained to help patients and their families better understand health information. The library and I are always here and happy to partner with you to help you and your family make informed decisions based on your individual needs. One of the things I love most about my job is helping families find the materials they need to make their experience at Riley a satisfying one.
The Riley library currently has almost 300 medical and support brochures as well as over 250 credible website links that can be accessed 24/7 from the library’s online catalog or mobile app. The online catalog can be found here. To access the mobile app: download the app “Library Trek” to your mobile device and connect to Riley Block Family Library. You will need an ID or password to put items on hold however, you may search materials, brochure links and website links without an ID or password.
In addition to medical and support information the library also contains books for all ages, over 2,000 movies, 200 video games, puzzles, board games, and magazines. Some of our helpful services include: phone charging, faxing, copying and printing capabilities. The library also has volunteers that regularly read to patients, as well as a book cart that visits patient rooms on evenings and weekends.
The library also provides the free book carts, which are supplied with donated books, can be found throughout the hospital. Due to the libraries extensive collection the number of items that can be checked out exceeds the checkout limits on the floors (i.e. you may check out six movies at a time). All materials are searchable from the online catalog and mobile app.
The library also sponsors a number of other unique programs including: Riley Reading Time (on CCTV), dial a story, (dial 317-944-1149 press 1 for a story and 2 for the library) and storytellers (they come every Wednesday night).
Our library is here for patients and families of Riley Hospital for Children. We offer entertainment, information and a relaxing place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the hospital. The library is located within the 1924 entrance/lobby of the hospital and is open 9 am to 5 pm Monday – Friday. We warmly invite you to come and visit us soon.
