Camp About Face 2014

Children with cleft palate or craniofacial anomalies often feel different and may find it hard to make friends with peers. Founded in 1989, Camp About Face gives kids with craniofacial anomalies a fun camping experience and the chance to meet others who face the unique challenge of growing up with facial difference. Camp About Face helps these kids realize they are not alone and that others share similar struggles.

The camp meets for one week each year on 2500 scenic acres at the Bradford Woods Outdoor Education and Recreation Center in Martinsville, Indiana. Home to "Camp Riley" and other medical-specialty camps, Bradford Woods provides an environment that enhances socialization and self-esteem through fun and challenging recreational activities. Trained counselors act as positive role models, mentoring campers and helping them to grow both personally and socially.

Campers participate in all the traditional camp experiences including:

  • Swimming
  • Horse back riding
  • Canoeing
  • Caving
  • Hiking
  • Arts and crafts
  • A camp-wide dance
  • Team building games

Campers aged 8-18 come from all over Indiana and the Midwest, including Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky. For campers age 16-18, Camp About Face offers the Leadership Academy during the weekend before Camp About Face begins. Participants in the Leadership Academy focus on leadership, self-reflection and skills that will help them transition into adulthood.

Corporate sponsors and individual donations help fund this special experience. If you are interested in making a donation or learning more about Camp About Face, please contact the Cleft and Craniofacial Office at 317.274.2489.
